Short Biography

Hi! My name is Sandy. I am a doctoral student working on information extraction from late medieval charters at the University of Graz. Prior to joining the Uni-Graz Digital Humanities Center, I did an engineering stint in information extraction at the University of California, Berkeley. This was followed by a brief research experience, which consisted of looking into the state-of-the-art of Arabic named and relational entity extraction, at the American University of Beirut.
From September 2019 until November 2020, I worked on identifying and tackling challenges in the Arabic automatic speech recognition field, at the American University of Beirut. Prior to joining AUB, I worked for ten months on a research project which aspires to optimize the process of constructing the speech corpus of unit selection synthesizers, at the University of Rennes I.
My formal learning path resulted in receiving a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the Lebanese University in 2014, and then graduating first in class with a master's degree in Computer Science from the Lebanese University and the University of Toulouse III in 2016.
The talent which makes me stand out the most at work is my superior analytical abilities which enable me to solve problems quite quickly and efficiently. I especially possess remarkable critical thinking, logical reasoning, creative thinking, and communication competence. My other practical strengths include being extremely organized; being a fast learner; and being able to self-teach myself many things from scratch.
In respect to technical computer science skills, my strength lies in my ability to exploit publicly available libraries; frameworks; codes; and other resources to solve my problems or to use them as a basis to build my solutions. In addition to that, I comprehend the way programming languages work which facilitates the process of teaching myself new (needed) programming languages and technologies. For more specific technical skills: Python is the programming language I employed most in my research work; Ubuntu is my operating system of choice; I am proficient in LaTeX; I built this mobile-friendly website from the ground up; and I figure out missing technical knowledge by consulting a search engine.
Besides computer science, I hold other interests such as history; philosophy; finance; and art, hence I enjoy spending my free time doing activities which expand my breadth and depth of knowledge in these areas. I also enjoy meeting people coming from different cultures and backgrounds which helps in widening my opinions and conclusions.
